Exhibition of artist Huynh Van Thuan

Painter Huynh Van Thuan is one of the very few Vietnamese painters who studied and graduated from both of the most prestigious Fine Arts schools in Vietnam founded by the French in the early years of the 20th century, which are the Gia Dinh Drawing School (established in 1913 in the South) and Indochina Fine Arts School (established in 1925 in the North).

He is also one of the very few painters who has held many important positions in the Fine Arts industry, both actively working in the socio-political field and quite successful in his artistic career.

Known and successful in many different painting genres (propaganda paintings, wood carvings, caricatures and especially engraved paintings, etc.), especially with the engraved painting "Vinh Moc Village" the painter Huynh Van Thuan left behind life and the history of Vietnamese Fine Arts a masterpiece that will last forever. We, along with many art critics and art lovers, will sympathize with the sentiments of Mr. Huynh Le Tuan (son of painter Huynh Van Thuan) "Huynh Van Thuan's engraved paintings have moved no longer" Salon "Moreover, it is imbued with the atmosphere of people working, producing, fighting, the idyllic landscape of trees, flowers, and the mountains and rivers of Vietnam".

But, very few people know that in order to succeed in many of the above genres, painter Huynh Van Thuan worked very diligently in artistic work with sketches (mostly with pencil, ink, pigments, and liquids...) to record "historical" documents in places where the painter has gone, lived, worked and fought with his people and comrades. His sketches have left a mark of artistic value over time at many different historical moments and periods: during the resistance war against the French, after 1954 in the North, at Vinh Linh tunnels, on the Ho Chi Minh Trail during the resistance war against the US and even after 1975.

The characters in his paintings are very simple people, they are the National Guard, the soldiers, the female militia, the guerrillas, the old farmers, the mothers, the sisters, the young people, teenagers, etc. He painted scenes of people's everyday activities... (cooking rice, learning to sing, playing the instrument, reading newspapers, rehearsing, cleaning guns, aiming, capturing and distributing trophies, observing the enemy,...); the landscapes of the homeland, the scenes of production labor, the fierceness and destruction of war...

It can be said that, along with engravings, propaganda paintings, pencil sketches... have positioned Huynh Van Thuan's name in the history of modern Vietnamese Fine Arts. As former President of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association Tran Khanh Chuong said: "His life and works are an example, a personality of a true artist recognized and highly appreciated by the Vietnamese Fine Arts world." Art critic and painter Quang Viet also commented: "For him, pencil drawings are true works that can make a career for a painter. Besides, along with the liquid, the pencil is also very suitable for his hobby of drawing and composing on the spot in front of real scenes, real things, and real people."

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the late painter Huynh Van Thuan, Binh Minh Art Gallery along with the Van Lang Cultural and Art Exchange Center and Mr. Huynh Le Tuan (son of artist Huynh Van Thuan) coordinated to organize the " exhibition celebrating the 100th birthday of artist Huynh Van Thuan" with a part of pencil sketches in the collection of Binh Minh Art Gallery and Van Lang Cultural and Art Exchange Center.

I think, literature is people and paintings are also people... Let these pencil sketches of the artist be a deep dialogue... with colleagues and the viewing public. Through this exhibition, Binh Minh Art Gallery and Van Lang Cultural and Art Exchange Center hope to introduce to colleagues, collectors, art investors and the Fine Art-loving public a very small part of the paintings. Sketches in the huge creative career of artist Huynh Van Thuan, this is also an "incense stick" to commemorate his soul.

We would like to sincerely thank the Vietnam Fine Arts Association, the Department of Fine Arts Photography - Exhibition for their encouragement and support, and thank the "Chon" Art auction house for sponsoring and being a reliable address for the exhibition. This exhibition has many meanings. Wishing generations of painters, sculptors, collectors, art investors and the art-loving public who come to this exhibition to have good health, happiness and success!
