My friend, artist Nguyen Dinh Thuan was born in 1948 and currently lives in Westminster, California, USA. Graduated in painting from Hue College of Fine Arts. Nguyen Dinh Thuan is a gentle person, very kind, likes to make friends and help friends when they are in need.
He lives quietly, leisurely and paints. Every time I travel, I meet him on sunny mornings and tranquil evenings with a few artistic friends having fun together, enough to make the space filled with happiness. The enthusiastic way of welcoming friends makes anyone who comes to the Westminster area remember that Nguyen Dinh Thuan is the most reliable, warm, appropriate and peaceful address.

This time returning to visit his homeland, Thuan brought with him 28 mostly abstract paintings to exhibit, for the first time in Saigon (Gallery Binh Minh, 29A Ngo Thoi Nhiem, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City, from July 23 until August 1, 2023). 50 years is an important milestone. It is a time effort of half a person's life. Celebrating 50 years is when people want to show everyone an achievement that makes them feel satisfied and achieve success. Artists even pay more attention to it because they show us the discoveries accumulated over many years through their works. We will come to the exhibition to share the great and beautiful things of the artist.

In literature and art, creators always need the public. Writers and poets need readers, artists need viewers, singers need audiences... Returning to their homeland to exhibit is an appropriate choice, especially recently the field of painting is blooming in the country; in addition to a broad view of art, the exhibition space meets all standards to create good conditions for artists, which has brought prosperity.
Being asked about the purpose and direction of finding beauty in painting and how to develop the topic, artist Nguyen Dinh Thuan said: "This painting exhibition does not focus on a certain theme. I often draw based on experience and emotion. In my opinion, the theme only reduces the overall view of introspection and limits".
Thus the artist chose freedom, chose abstraction to absolutely liberate himself from the restrictive conventions for creating paintings. There was a time when Nguyen Dinh Thuan mixed abstract with some impressive images that people often call semi-abstract but it is still necessary to express strong emotions to captivate viewers...
Here, in 28 paintings, we see that Nguyen Dinh Thuan rejects lines, the positive random lines with strong intensity of movement, to only spread bright expressive color points that are almost pure evenly on separated color patches, or scattered composition creates an arena in which beauty and harmony meet chaos.

Nguyễn Đình Thuần further stated, "Painting (art in general) is a journey without a destination. One must persistently and courageously pursue this endless path. Beauty is everywhere, and whatever moves you, you paint it. There's no need to confine yourself to specific subjects."
Paul Gauguin once said that painting is a quest to the truth of beauty. A "real" truth. And truth is something one must constantly seek. Meaning, an artist's journey is a journey without a stop. Painting, from ancient times to the present, is still evolving and will continue to do so, forever.

Each person's discoveries can suggest new directions for the others. Working silently alone can lead to a lack of dynamism, and efforts become merely a way to fill a void.
One taboo to artist is painting to relax. Painting to relax is like painting birds, flowers, or fish and hanging them on a wall for decoration. It cannot be considered a work of art. A work of art is about humanity, about existence, and about a life that can influence the emotions of others. Artists are providers to viewers with something that can create various effects.

Every artist wants to develop a unique style. However, most are initially constrained by long-established habits and conventional norms. Those who have graduated from schools are particularly susceptible to these habits, which can hinder their ability to break free. Habits like leisurely completing tasks, habits in ways of thinking and observing, habits of relying on existing skills to easily finish work.
