The fate came to Truong Van Thuan nearly 30 years ago, when he helped the family of a famous artist and a collector in difficult times.
His devotion to his new friends led to something unexpected: he began to enjoy looking at paintings. The initial curiosity became a passion and from there a love for painting grew over time.
Accidental fate
At that time, around 1990, when a collector and the family of a famous artist were in a difficult situation, Mr. Truong Van Thuan enthusiastically helped them. After long conversations over tea, they became friends. From that moment on, he began to pay attention to paintings and liked to listen to people talk about paintings and works of art. Through new stories, he found more knowledge for himself. Gradually, he realized that the paintings really helped him relax after stressful and complicated hours in the work of a high-ranking police officer.
Like many art enthusiasts, collector Truong Van Thuan went through an awkward time collecting paintings by senior artists who studied at the Indochina School of Fine Arts and some famous artists who have passed away. . For someone who is not in the art world and has no experience, equipping yourself with the necessary knowledge to appreciate the beauty and artistic value of a painting is not easy. Not to mention the appraisal of real and fake paintings - a very important thing, sometimes deciding the life of the collector. The profession is also very elaborate - in the art world, many collectors had to pay expensive "tuition fees" before learning their own lessons. Collector Truong Van Thuan is no exception.
Being a progressive person, from the times he met artists to collect paintings, he realized a very important thing: meeting artists and sculptors is not only to exchange and learn about their own works, It was also an opportunity for him to learn about fine arts, gaining knowledge to identify the beauty of a work, the authenticity and fakeness of that work for himself. Thinking and then doing, he proactively spent time contacting and going to the homes of many painters and sculptors to see them work firsthand and also to learn. The list of new friends who are famous painters and sculptors is also growing.
Over time, the couple's house also became a place for artists and artists to regularly meet and interact. Artists cherish him because of his sincerity; require progress and above all their appreciation for artists and their passion for works of art in a natural way, without placing too much emphasis on commercialism. "Artists are the most important contributors so that I can perfect my art collection to what it is today," Mr. Thuan confided.
Recommended for art lovers
Having journeyed to art for nearly 30 years, Truong Van Thuan now has a unique position in the collector world. To get this result, he paid the price many times, was not afraid to fail and constantly learned. It is even normal for collectors to have to pursue for five or seven years before purchasing a satisfactory work. “Once I saw a very old lacquer painting, the author was unknown, but I thought it was beautiful and liked it so I bought it. Partly, the owner of the painting could not sell it to anyone, so the painting was not properly cared for and preserved and became tarnished and black. I had to tinker with it over and over again to get it like this," he said, pointing to a small lacquer painting of a Hanoi landscape. Only later did he learn that this painting was by artist Nguyen Tien Chung, one of the master artists from the Indochina School of Fine Arts. The painting was painted in 1943 - its age is even older than his life.
For the first time, a part of Mr. Truong Van Thuan's collection was introduced public to the art-loving world at the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts. The exhibition "A Love of Painting" introduces about 200 paintings and statues of over 80 artists and sculptors... attracting the public's attention because no collector has ever done this. . Among them are more than 20 lacquer works, nearly 100 oil paintings, 15 sculptures and dozens of portraits of him and his family - the sentiments of loving artists expressed.
According to Mr. Thuan, the works at this exhibition have "completed documents"... This is just a part of the collection of thousands of valuable paintings, statues, sketches, and sculptures from different generations. Generation of Vietnamese painters and artists from many periods of time - is his legacy for nearly 30 years of quietly and persistently searching for beauty. In the collection that he considers a treasure, there are many names that make art lovers dream: Nguyen Gia Tri, Ta Ty, Mai Long, Duong Bich Lien, Bui Xuan Phai, Hoang Tich Chu, Luu Van Sin, Le Van Xuong, and Do Dinh Hiep...and many young contemporary artists.
This first exhibition was also an occasion to celebrate his 60th birthday - when he was able to rest and devote all his time to art collection. Through the exhibition, the collector wishes to share his love of art with the public, to motivate him, and to encourage those who love collecting in an elegant but equally arduous hobby. Thereby honoring the great cultural values of Vietnamese fine arts, contributing to the development of a healthy fine arts market.
Dr. Ma Thanh Cao, former director of the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts, shared: "What is precious about collector Truong Van Thuan is his attitude of appreciating art, sincerity and kindness in his profession. He is also very lucky to have a partner who always supports and encourages him to pursue his passion. Because she is also a person who works in a kind of art and also loves beauty, and is always friendly and hospitable."
