Looking at the aspect of the collection theme, the exhibition 'A love of painting' – introducing a part of Truong Van Thuan's collection (opening at 10am on June 22 at the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts) is unique in Vietnam.
The exhibition displays about 200 paintings and statues by more than 80 artists and sculptors. Nearly half of them are portraits of the collector himself and his family.
This is also the first exhibition of Truong Van Thuan - a painting collector with nearly 30 years of experience. Mr. Thuan said the reason for the exhibition is because this is the year he turns 60 years old, he will retire to devote all his mind and resources to collecting fine art.
In the world as well as in Vietnam, the exhibition of portrait paintings of, or about, a person or a family is not uncommon. But every time we encounter them, there are new surprises, because the stories of those portraits depend largely on the characteristics of the characters being shown. The same goes for Truong Van Thuan's exhibition, which are portraits that artists and sculptors have created of him (mainly) and his wife and children in many different situations and moods.
Looking at the "photogenic" aspect, Truong Van Thuan is completely opposite to his wife - circus artist Anh Tuyet - he is a "hidden" person, so creating his portrait was a big challenge. Although his inner world is quite rich, on the outside he is a person who behaves in moderation and has principles, so in terms of personality, shaping is also difficult. In such conditions, to have a comprehensive portrait exhibition like A Love of Painting makes the public especially interested.
Truong Van Thuan said he has more than 100 statue paintings and more than 100 portrait sketches of himself. He said that the works came after he played with the authors, they drew them if they liked them, but if he simply hired them to draw, he would have had a lot now, not stopping at the modest number as just mentioned.
“The portrait painting series of collector Truong Van Thuan and his wife (circus artist Anh Tuyet) gradually formed from conversations and meetings. The number of paintings and portrait sketches of the collector and his wife is more than 200 - a very small number compared to the thousands of paintings, statues and sketches he keeps, but speaks about the sentiments of the artist and sculptors on the couple who love painting Truong Thuan - Anh Tuyet.
Over the years, their home became more and more imbued with friendship and artistic atmosphere. He is very lucky to have a partner who always supports and encourages her husband to realize his passion as a special love. Because she is also someone who works in a form of art and also loves beauty, always friendly and hospitable" - Dr. Ma Thanh Cao (former Director of Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts) said.
The exhibition “A Love of Painting” also introduces a small part of Truong Van Thuan's painting collection, in which he has his own position in this field. The collection is quite comprehensive, from early authors, masters to contemporary names. Many works he came across by chance, found them beautiful, even though the author was unknown, he still bought them and then slowly researched them. According to Mr. Thuan, the works at this exhibition have "completed their documents". Any work that is unclear or uncertain should not be made public or may even be destroyed.
“In the painting profession, there have been many people who, because they were too confident in their sensitivity, brought in mediocre works. Not only does it lose money, but it is also an unwanted way to get mistakes in aesthetic perception. Those mistakes can sometimes cost a lifetime of collecting.
Fortunately, Mr. Truong Van Thuan met and discussed with leading artists of Vietnamese fine arts right from his confused days. More over, the artists who had the opportunity to interact with him recognized his sincerity and passion. They were willing to help him impartially. From veteran artist such as Mai Long, Tran Luu Hau, Bui Quang Ngoc, Van Tho... to the next class of juniors: Nghiem Xuan Hung, Hua Thanh Binh, Pham Minh Hai, Nguyen Tan Cuong... All have become his friends before being the authors he collected" - artist Do Phan shared.
Collector Truong Van Thuan was born in 1957 in Ha Nam province. He has a master's degree in law and a bachelor's degree in economics. He officially started collecting paintings by chance in 1991. Since then, he has quietly and persistently collected so that today he holds thousands of valuable works, sketches, drawings, documents... of Vietnamese artists in many periods.
The exhibition One Love of Painting ended on July 2, 2017.
