Although he graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy, Saigon University of Literature and won a bronze medal in painting (1970), a gold medal in sculpture (1973), he then had to go through many years of hard work, economic difficulties that almost forced him to put down his brush.

In his works, Nguyen Than always focuses on the image of Vietnamese women, exploiting their simple, gentle beauty and the purity of their souls. In particular, he does not describe the physical form but aims at the beauty of the mind, where people and space blend in silence.

“The woman sitting by the window” is a typical image, not only a character but also a metaphor for deep contemplation of identity, time and light penetrating the inner self. The window in Nguyen Than’s paintings is seen as a fragile border between the outside and the inside, between existence and dreams.
The woman in his paintings has no face, no clear details, but exists with a silence that knows how to speak, knows how to tell stories beyond words. The main color is warm brown, highlighting the moment when light gently touches the skin, creating a gentle, soft loneliness.
At the opening ceremony, artist Nguyen Than shared: “For me, it is not just about shape and color, but also about breath. It is the way I record what I see, what I feel… I painted the woman in the window not to tell a specific story, but to capture a state of mind when a person sits with himself, looks out at the world through a small window and sees the light changing every minute on the wall, on his hands, in his memory”.
The exhibition “The Woman Sitting in the Window” is open to visitors from November 10 to November 20, at Binh Minh Art Gallery (29A Ngo Thoi Nhiem, Xuan Hoa Ward, Ho Chi Minh City).
