TTO - At the age of 80, artist Ho Huu Thu will perform a duet with painter Dang Kim Long for the first time at the Spring exhibition at Binh Minh gallery (District 3, Ho Chi Minh City).
"This is lacquer!" - Collector Truong Van Thuan could not hide his extreme emotions when looking at the painting Ba Chua by painter Ho Huu Thu.
The public coming to the exhibition will also enjoy works by painter Ho Huu Thu owned by collector Truong Van Thuan. It was not only Mr. Truong Van Thuan who was startled when standing in front of the work "Ba Chua" and it was not only that painting that Ho Huu Thu fascinated his audience.
Ho Huu Thu is famous for its creativity and endless digging. Not many people at his age are healthy enough to paint large lacquer paintings, combining three panels, not to mention the expression of the work reaches a magical level under light: when it gets dark, it is extremely dark with vast and absorbing darkness.
When it's bright, it only lights up a few dots, as if many light sources are gathered in that small dot. He painted the girl's body beautifully, partly flirtatious, partly full of seriousness mixed with sharpness. The 40 paintings of Ho Huu Thu at the exhibition do not fully express his prolific creativity, painting is like breathing.
Because of painter Ho Huu Thu's spirit of constantly exploring new paths, journalist Nguyen Trong Chuc honored him as a "wizard of Vietnamese lacquer art".
Dang Kim Long has an unusually vicious artistic fate between making a living and creating. He came to art in poverty and then had to temporarily stop painting to work to make a living.
After returning to the world of painting in 2000, painter Dang Kim Long continued his passion for holding a brush, but it was not until he came to Australia and thanks to fate, that his works were recognized.
In 2017, he became a member and honorary expert of the Royal Society of Arts of South Australia.
Although he brought 79 works to the Spring exhibition, painter Dang Kim Long still devoted his whole heart to a series of portraits of respected teachers of the Gia Dinh painting school (now Ho Chi Minh City University of Fine Arts) such as a sincere gratitude.
From these masters, Dang Kim Long received instruction in both techniques and aesthetic methods, and especially the technique of capturing light.
That's why, in his lacquer paintings, like the work Pagoda Festival, light is spread across the surface of the painting, blending with the bustling atmosphere of spring. Or even in watercolor paintings, the misty space of Da Lat is also mixed by Dang Kim Long with the lyrical features of architecture, grass and trees.

There was a time when I lacked confidence
In the Spring exhibition, Dang Kim Long introduced 79 works, including 43 watercolor paintings, 24 oil paintings and 12 lacquer paintings. Viewers will enjoy recently created works depicting the image of gentle and graceful Vietnamese women. Draw charming hometown scenes and engrave images of relatives, friends, colleagues... following many different creative trends.
Born into a family where no one was active in the art industry, Dang Kim Long accidentally discovered his passion from a young age through watching a neighbor who was an art student draw. Then that first teacher taught him what he could, to learn more on his own with that passion.

In 1968, Dang Kim Long entered the Gia Dinh National School of Decorative and Fine Arts (now Ho Chi Minh City University of Fine Arts). Here, he was imparted the most basic knowledge to develop his talents. During those years, in Saigon, many artists, including his teachers, created following some new art trends in the world such as abstraction, animalism, surrealism, expressionism... That gave Dang Kim Long the basis to boldly compose in many different schools of art.
After graduating, he had to temporarily suspend his artistic activities for many different reasons. He confided: "War, chaos, and hunger, so I always have the burden of making a living on my shoulders, interrupting my painting, but in my heart I cannot give up painting or drawing."
Then for a long time he worked at the Department of Culture and Information of Ho Chi Minh City. He was quite busy and had no time for passion, so he later returned to composing. Sometimes he feels insecure. The person who encouraged and encouraged him to return was painter Ho Huu Thu - whom he always respected as a teacher.

Experience with many materials
Since 2000, Dang Kim Long has participated in many exhibitions with friends and colleagues after passionately returning to activities. Every year, he participates in many creative camps, exhibitions at the Vietnam Fine Arts Association, Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Association and group exhibitions with friends.
In addition, from 2015-2019, he organized a number of exhibitions in Australia and also achieved some encouraging results such as Award of Merit for two works Rainy Days and Wild & Free (2015), Award of Merit for The Festive Season (2016), Highly Commended for Adelaide Love (2017)...
And in 2017, Dang Kim Long was honored to be recognized as a member of the Royal South Australian Society of Arts (Certificate for Associate Membership of the Royal South Australian Society of Arts Inc). Also in 2017, he also received an official Diploma of Fellowship and was named an honorary expert of the Royal Society of Arts of South Australia.
Like many other artists, artist Dang Kim Long wondered many times about the direction of his work. Many nights, he sat in front of his brush, canvas, paint... and then kept drawing and erasing countless times to achieve the goal. Then in today's fortune there are many different trends. He is also experienced with many painting materials, from traditional lacquer to oil paint and watercolor. Each material he tries to promote its strengths to express the scenery of the places he has visited and the people he has met.

One of his most prolific works is portrait painting. The teachers, relatives, friends and colleagues in his paintings appear realistically and simply, and the viewer can also feel the love and respect of the artist for his model. Lacquer material has been exploited by him to express the shimmering and magical beauty of Vietnamese girls, lotus flowers and landscapes, and nostalgic features with realistic, romantic and abstract drawing styles.
As someone who spent his childhood and youth in difficulty, Dang Kim Long is always ready to share with difficult life situations, supporting poor children who are passionate about painting with dedicated teaching sessions. Friends organized a charity exhibition, the proceeds helped children who had to undergo surgery for cleft palates and victims of Agent Orange.
The happiest thing for an artist is to live with his passion all his life. Dang Kim Long is such a person and he is also someone who knows how to share difficulties with everyone, always appreciates human love and is quite humble in everyday life. This exhibition at Binh Minh Art Gallery is also his gratitude to his teachers, friends and life.
