(CAO) More than 50 paintings and many documents by famous artist Nguyen Gia Tri – the top tier artist of Vietnamese fine arts are displayed in an exhibition commemorating the 30th anniversary of his death.
Attending the opening ceremony of the exhibition in the morning of June 1 were journalist Tran Trong Dung - Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association, artist Luong Xuan Doan - Chairman of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association; Mr. Nguyen Gia Tue - son of the late artist Nguyen Gia Tri, and many prominent faces of the Ho Chi Minh City art world.
The exhibition is organized by Binh Minh Art Gallery in collaboration with the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Association and the family of famous artist Nguyen Gia Tri, displaying paper paintings, sketches, and outlines in the collection that Binh Minh art gallery has kept in many years.
Over 50 paintings and many documents of the artist are on display from June 1 to June 8 at 29A Ngo Thoi Nhiem, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City. "Hopefully through this exhibition, the public will have a new perspective on Fine Arts and Academics regarding the famous artist Nguyen Gia Tri," collector Truong Van Thuan shared.
Artist Nguyen Gia Tri along with famous artists To Ngoc Van, Nguyen Tuong Lan, Tran Van Can formed a quartet of famous artists in the early period of Vietnamese fine arts: "Tri - Van - Lan - Can".
Nguyen Gia Tri was born in 1908. In 1936, he graduated from the Indochina College of Fine Arts, and was awarded the Ho Chi Minh Prize for Literature and Arts.
He was a pioneer in transforming lacquer paintings from decoration into artistic masterpieces and from then on he was known as "the father of modern Vietnamese lacquer paintings". He is also one of the famous artists at the forefront of creating a new artistic trend for Vietnam, with elegant lines and new ideas about lacquer art.
Familiar themes in his paintings are graceful, leisurely young ladies in dreamy natural scenery. With lacquer material, vermilion, gold, silver, eggshell, and puce, Nguyen Gia Tri had created a splendid beauty and a mysterious depth for lacquer paintings, bringing lacquer techniques to the peak, affirming the importance of this painting material in Vietnamese fine arts.
The public can find his works in the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Museum and in many private collections at home and abroad. However, few people know that before the lacquer technique was demonstrated and sublimated, he had to make many sketches; many steps, many details are carefully calculated in terms of ideas, graphics, colors and layout; many of his paintings are truly his masterpieces.
