PNO - Artist Nguyen Xuan Viet, a student of famous artist Nguyen Gia Tri, said his life and painting went through many ups and downs, mostly because of food, clothes, and money.
At the exhibition Poetic Soul, Silk and Lacquer Poetry for himself and his wife, artist Nguyen Xuan Viet thought a lot about his life and his painting path. He said that on the first day of his painting career, he went to artist Nguyen Gia Tri's house to study. As soon as she entered the house, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Kim - wife of famous artist Nguyen Gia Tri immediately said: "What's the point of learning this starving profession!”
At that time, artist Nguyen Xuan Viet did not really understand Mrs. Kim's words, but later, over many years of pursuing his passion, he absorbed every word. “My life has had many ups and downs, but it was not influenced by anyone else or the times, but by my own personal life. I am passionate about painting, but I have a family and responsibilities to make a living, so sometimes working in this profession is not easy. Sometimes it's very slow and heavy, sometimes it's fun, but the important thing is that I never stop," said artist Nguyen Xuan Viet.

Born in a family of many brothers, pursuing a painting career requires artist Nguyen Xuan Viet to make great efforts. Until joining the same house with artist Nguyen Thi Bich Nga, life continued to pose many new challenges, but artist Nguyen Xuan Viet believes that everyone who follows art has certain difficulties that if overcome or at least "living together" is certain, life is still full of joy.
At the joint exhibition with his wife - artist Nguyen Thi Bich Nga, the two brought 40 paintings using main materials including lacquer and silk. Artist Nguyen Xuan Viet has been pursuing traditional lacquer for decades. And his wife made her name with paintings on silk. According to artist Nguyen Xuan Viet, he was the one who guided his wife to painting, but she rarely acknowledged herself as his "student", probably because she was "afraid or thought she would explore on her own." – He said.

For many years, the artist couple Xuan Viet and Bich Nga have appeared together in many exhibitions both domestically and internationally. Both are recognized for their own abilities, independent of each other. As for artist Nguyen Xuan Viet, despite being a true student of famous artist Nguyen Gia Tri for 17 years, according to artist Le Dai Chuc's comments, artist Xuan Viet's style is different and unaffected.
Sharing with Ho Chi Minh City Women's Newspaper, artist Le Dai Chuc said: "In the art world, there are few people who pursue and go to the end of their passion like artist Nguyen Xuan Viet. I love and respect the work and personality of the male artist. And even though I am a student of the famous artist Nguyen Gia Tri, I see that artist Xuan Viet has his own style and brushwork that is not influenced by his teacher, but is different from other artists who also pursue other traditional lacquer".

In addition to composing, artist Nguyen Xuan Viet also participates in teaching many students. He often goes to Thailand to teach basic lacquer courses. He said that many artists from other countries like Vietnamese lacquer, but after studying, they do not have the perseverance to pursue it
At the exhibition Poetic Soul, Silk and Lacquer, impressive works by artist Nguyen Xuan Viet and his wife were displayed again. Most of them were composed before, not recently completed. Artist Nguyen Xuan Viet said that during the recent epidemic, when many artists created many works, he could not complete any of them.

“Because of the epidemic, most of my workers are off, and many paintings cannot be completed. During the time of social distancing, the mind is not at peace, there is no feeling of relaxation, so no painting can be done. I often compose, I don't take too long a break, but I have to do it when I'm not busy," the male artist shared.
The exhibition Poetic Soul of silk and lacquer is taking place at Binh Minh gallery (29A Ngo Thoi Nhiem, District 3, HCMC). The exhibition lasts until January 22.
